History was made on Friday night in Elizabeth City, NC as the Stratford University Women's Basketball program overcame an 18-4 hole after one quarter to win the program opener 58-57 over Mid Atlantic Christian University.
Synquist Strothers made the first field goal in program history, the first two of seventeen points on the night, for the sophomore from Newport News, to go along with five rebounds, two steals, two assists and a blocked shot. Brianna Daniels added sixteen points and seven rebounds for the Lady Cardinals, including connecting on four of five shots from beyond the three point arc.
On the defensive end, Yolanda Fells and Nyare Evans were a force on the boards for Stratford as Fells pulled down sixteen rebounds, eleven of which were on the defensive end, to go along with six points, while Evans notched ten rebounds and seven points. Chanel Pope had three steals to lead the Cardinals. After falling behind in double digits early, the Cardinals moved to a man-to-man defense and held the Mustangs to thirty percent from the field and nine percent from three point land.
The Cardinals pulled to within 30-20 heading into the half and outscored MACU 38-27 in the second half and scored twenty-one points off of turnovers.
Stratford improves to 1-0 and returns to action on Tuesday night as they travel to Virginia University of Lynchburg.
